When Therapy Did Not Work Before: What Christian Counseling Does Differently in Houston
If therapy left you with insight but little change, a different approach may help. Learn how faith, nervous system regulation, and root work can support deeper healing.

Maybe you've been to therapy before.
You talked about your childhood. You learned why you people-please, why conflict makes you anxious, or why you keep repeating the same relationship patterns. You may understand yourself better than you did before.
But something still hasn't changed.
If you've walked away thinking, Therapy just doesn't work for me, I would encourage you to get curious before deciding that's true.
When someone comes to my practice for Christian counseling in Houston, TX after trying therapy before, I'm interested in what happened—not in deciding that their previous therapy was "bad."
Was the therapist a good fit? What type of therapy were you doing?
Were you emotionally and mentally ready for the work? Did you realistically have the time and financial capacity to commit to therapy? What was happening in your life at the time?
Sometimes therapy didn't fail.
Sometimes it simply wasn't the right therapist, approach, season, or level of readiness.
Your Relationship With Your Therapist Matters
One of the first things I consider is fit.
Research on psychotherapy consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship—including trust, rapport, and collaboration—is an important predictor of positive outcomes.
I encourage clients to give themselves about one to three sessions to begin determining whether a therapist feels like a good fit.
Do you trust this person?
Do you feel heard?
Can you disagree with them?
Do you feel comfortable telling them when something isn't working?
Do you actually want to come back?
Credentials and training matter, but you're also sitting across from another human being. You need someone you can build a real therapeutic relationship with.
Understanding Why Is Not the Same as Healing
One of the biggest differences I see is between understanding something logically and actually experiencing change.
You may already know:
I people-please because of my childhood.
I know I'm safe now.
I know I don't have to be perfect.
I know this relationship isn't the relationship that hurt me.
That's valuable insight.
But there's a difference between understanding something through reason and logic and responding with compassion while doing the work required to unlearn and relearn.
Your mind may understand that you're safe while your body is still responding as if you're not.
That's why I don't believe the answer is always to keep talking about the same problem.
First We Stabilize, Then We Get Curious
When someone comes to my Houston office wanting deeper work, I don't automatically start digging into trauma.
First, we stabilize.
I offer clients tools to help regulate their nervous system and develop functional coping skills. We work toward being able to experience emotions without immediately becoming overwhelmed by them.
Then we get curious.
Are you interested in going deeper?
Are you ready to explore why these patterns developed?
That's where I often describe therapy as:
Collect the dots. Connect the dots. Correct the dots.
We gather information about what's happening today. We explore how your current reactions may connect to previous experiences, relationships, beliefs, or wounds. Then we work toward changing what no longer serves you.
Depending on the client, I may incorporate approaches such as EMDR and Internal Family Systems (IFS) alongside Christian counseling.
The goal isn't simply to understand your story.
It's to help what you've learned begin showing up differently in your life.
What Makes Christian Counseling Different?
For me, Christian counseling in Houston, TX isn't secular therapy with a Bible verse added at the end.
I believe the Holy Spirit is the agent of change.
I believe He is present in every session with us, whether we explicitly invite Him into that particular conversation or not.
That also changes how I view my responsibility as a therapist.
When you leave my office, I'm sending you away with Him.
You're in much better hands than mine.
God is the great Counselor. He is our Helper. He is our tear collector. I don't have to carry the pressure of believing that your healing depends entirely on what happens during one hour with me.
Christian Counseling Should Make Room for Pain
Christian counseling also doesn't mean we're going to explain away difficult emotions with Scripture.
Sometimes Christians believe they shouldn't still be hurting.
I know God is in control, so why am I anxious?
I've forgiven them, so why does this still hurt?
I know God loves me, so why don't I feel lovable?
But look at Christ.
Jesus came to earth as the Son of Man. He is well acquainted with the emotions we experience.
He was perfect, yet He experienced judgment, rejection, isolation, betrayal, abuse, grief, and ultimately death.
To be human is to feel emotion, and Jesus modeled that for us.
God doesn't require you to pretend something didn't hurt in order to prove that you trust Him.
We can lament.
We can cry.
We can wrestle.
We can ask difficult questions.
And we can allow God to meet us there.
Faith and Evidence-Based Therapy Can Work Together
Choosing Christian counseling in Houston doesn't mean choosing faith instead of sound clinical treatment.
I am continually reading, studying, and learning researched, evidence-based ways to better support my clients.
Depending on your individual needs and goals, that may include EMDR, IFS, nervous-system regulation, coping skills, trauma work, or other therapeutic interventions.
Faith doesn't have to replace good clinical care, and good clinical care doesn't have to require leaving your faith outside the therapy room.
For clients who want Christian counseling, we can make room for both.
My Goal Is to Work Myself Out of a Job
My goal isn't for you to need weekly therapy forever.
My goal is to work myself out of a job.
I want you to reach the goals that brought you to therapy. I want you to understand yourself, develop tools that actually work for you, address root issues when appropriate, and learn how to use what you've practiced in my office when life happens outside of it.
Eventually, you may not need me regularly anymore.
That's a good thing.
And then life will inevitably happen.
Maybe you'll use the tools you've already learned. Maybe you'll need one session to work through something new. Or maybe another season comes when you want consistent support again.
I'm glad to be on speed dial.
We aren't meant to do this life alone. Our burdens are meant to be shared.
Trying Christian Counseling Again in Houston, TX
If therapy didn't work before, you don't have to force yourself back into the exact same kind of therapy and hope for a different result.
Get curious about what was missing.
Maybe it was fit. Maybe it was timing. Maybe you gained insight but never addressed the root. Maybe your nervous system needed stabilization before deeper work. Or maybe your faith is central to how you understand yourself, suffering, relationships, and healing, yet there wasn't room for God in your previous therapy experience.
