How to Find a Christian Counselor in Houston, TX (And What to Look For)

Whether you're in Memorial, Spring Branch, the Galleria, or anywhere in Houston, here's how to choose a Christian counselor who is the right fit for you.

Searching for a Christian counselor in Houston, TX can feel overwhelming. With so many therapists to choose from, how do you know who's the right fit?

Whether you're struggling with trauma, anxiety, relationship problems, or feeling stuck in your faith, finding the right therapist can make all the difference. As a Christian counselor in Houston, I've learned that healing doesn't come from finding the "perfect" therapist. It comes from finding someone you trust, someone who understands your goals, and someone who can walk alongside you with both clinical expertise and biblical wisdom.

If you're looking for a Christian therapist in Houston or wondering what makes one counselor different from another, here are a few things I encourage you to consider.

The Right Fit Matters More Than You Think

One of the biggest mistakes people make is choosing the first therapist they find and assuming they have to stay with them.

Research consistently shows that one of the strongest predictors of successful therapy is the relationship between the therapist and client. You should feel safe, heard, respected, and understood.

Because of this, I encourage people to give therapy one to three sessions before deciding whether it's a good fit. Unless something feels unsafe or unethical, it often takes a few meetings to build trust and know whether you connect with your therapist.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I feel comfortable talking with this therapist?
  • Do I feel listened to without judgment?
  • Do I leave feeling hopeful?
  • Do I want to come back next week?
  • Does their approach make sense to me?

Remember, therapy isn't something that's done to you. It's a relationship. A good therapist welcomes your questions and your feedback.

Interview Your Christian Counselor

Many people don't realize they're allowed to interview a therapist before scheduling.

A consultation is your opportunity to determine whether the therapist is the right person for your unique situation.

Some questions I wish every potential client would ask include:

  • What does a typical counseling session look like?
  • How do you incorporate faith into counseling?
  • What training do you have in trauma, anxiety, or relationship issues?
  • How do you approach healing from past wounds?
  • What types of clients do you work with most often?

These questions often tell you much more than reading a therapist's website.

If you're looking for trauma therapy or EMDR, don't be afraid to ask about specialized training. Just because someone offers trauma therapy doesn't necessarily mean it's their primary area of expertise.

What Christian Counseling Means to Me

Not every Christian counselor in Houston, TX practices the same way.

My graduate training was completed through Dallas Theological Seminary's Houston campus, where I completed the 60 graduate hours in psychology required for Texas licensure along with an additional 30 graduate hours dedicated to Bible and theology. Every counseling course was taught through a biblical lens, showing us how to thoughtfully integrate Christian faith with evidence-based counseling.

For me, Christian counseling is much more than adding prayer or a Bible verse to the end of a session.

I believe the Holy Spirit is actively present during therapy. I rely on Him for wisdom, discernment, and guidance as we work together. One of the greatest comforts in my work is knowing that after our session ends, God continues caring for my clients. I don't carry the weight of believing someone's healing depends entirely on me because I know the Lord loves them even more than I do.

I also believe faith and excellent clinical care belong together. That's why I integrate approaches like EMDR alongside biblical truth. I don't believe we have to choose between science and faith. God has given us both.

Look for Someone Who Shares Your Worldview

If your relationship with Christ is central to your life, it makes sense to look for a counselor who understands that.

A shared worldview creates a foundation for conversations about suffering, forgiveness, identity, marriage, anxiety, trauma, and hope.

But shared beliefs aren't everything.

Your therapist is still a person.

Ask yourself:

  • Do they genuinely listen?
  • Do they make you feel safe?
  • Are they unbiased?
  • Do they maintain healthy professional boundaries?
  • Do they manage time well?
  • Do they naturally point you back to Christ if that's what you're hoping for?

These qualities often matter just as much as credentials.

Specialized Training Matters

Many people seek counseling for anxiety, stress, or relationship conflict only to discover that unresolved trauma is underneath many of their struggles.

If that's true for you, look for a therapist with advanced trauma training.

Trauma therapy often requires specialized approaches that go beyond supportive conversation. Treatments like EMDR can help your brain process painful experiences in a healthier way so lasting healing becomes possible.

Whether you're healing from childhood trauma, difficult relationships, grief, or overwhelming life experiences, specialized training can make a meaningful difference.

My Hope Is Bigger Than Therapy

I deeply value counseling research.

Evidence-based therapies have helped countless people heal, and I use approaches supported by research every day.

But my greatest hope isn't found in a counseling technique.

It's found in Christ.

God is still a God of miracles.

Sometimes He chooses to bring healing in ways we never expected. Other times He walks beside us through painful seasons, slowly transforming our hearts over time.

Either way, the Holy Spirit offers a peace that therapy alone cannot provide.

I've also seen that clients who know Jesus often experience healing that extends beyond symptom relief. They have hope anchored in Someone who never changes.

When we begin to see God as the good and trustworthy Father He truly is, our perspective changes. Scripture reminds us that if God gave us His only Son, we can trust His heart toward us. He delights in giving good gifts to His children, even when healing doesn't happen exactly how or when we hoped.
